The weather has been absolutely magnificent, dropping into the 40s during the night but in the mid 70s during the day. Still time to swim. Never mind heading north to view the foliage, we have great foliage along State Road in Aquinnah, and North Road as well as Middle Road in Chilmark.

Just a reminder, a potentially toxic phytoplankton bloom has been identified in Vineyard Sound waters. On Oct. 10 the Division of Marine Fisheries closed all waters, flats and tributaries on the Island to digging, harvesting or collecting shellfish with the exception of bay and sea scallops (and snails). The waters shall remain closed until examined by the DMF and notification is made that the areas are placed in the open status.

His father was a fisherman and Sandy, as he was known, grew up on the working waterfront, becoming a commercial fisherman himself. In the century since his birth, Edgartown has changed dramatically. Hear the stories he relates in oral history interviews, and experience the Edgartown of his formative years through watercolors, prints, photographs, ship models, objects and film footage that bring his stories to life. Free and open to all.

Martha’s Vineyard Community Services, in conjunction with Bruno’s, will sponsor the electronic disposal day Saturday at the campus across the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School and next door to the YMCA. The hours are 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Prices vary from $2 up to $30, for everything from computers to appliances and scrap metals, with a discount for a truckload of recyclables. Clean out your garages and basements. During the disposal day activities, non-perishable foods will be collected as well, in new packages, not dented and not beyond the expiration date. Donations will assist those in need at the Serving Hands Food Cupboard as well as at the Food Pantry. The proceeds of the disposal day will assist more than 6,000 Vineyarders on a year round basis.

There were probably more than 100 weddings on the Vineyard over the past month, one of them being our treasured Up-Island Council on Aging administrative assistant Bethany DeBettencourt and her new husband Steve Hammond. All the best to Bethany and Steve.

Condolences to the family and friends of Julie LaHart Keefe. Whenever Julie was residing on the Vineyard, she attended Martha’s Vineyard Regional High with the class of 1964. She was often residing on Nantucket or other adventurous places but her heritage was truly Vineyard and she treasured that.
