Halloween falls on a Monday and the epicenter for all things scary on the Island will be William street, where goblins, ghosts, princesses and mermaids of all shapes and sizes go to trick-or-treat. Although William street is the main event, there are many other favorite haunts and neighborhoods where the candy flows freely, in particular Vineyard avenue in Oak Bluffs, which will be closed to traffic on that evening, like the roads around William street too.

But Halloween is not just a one-night fright fest. Festivities begin on Friday and keep rolling throughout the weekend. The libraries around the Island host costume and craft making events and parties too. On Saturday night, the Yard dances into the action by setting up camp at the Farm Institute, with a haunted barn and guided walks from 5 to 7 p.m., complete with masks, music and movement in and around the Katama barn. There will be creatures of all sorts, including dancers and a spooky short film by Danielle Mulcahy.

To get the heart pumping, there is a Halloween Hustle run on Saturday morning to frighten away cancer, beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the Riverhead Disc Golf field off Barnes Road. The town of Oak Bluffs holds a trick-or-treating afternoon from 4 to 6 p.m. on Saturday and at the Kelley House in Edgartown there will be a spooky-themed Dance-O-Rama from noon to 2 p.m.

And because Halloween is not just for kids, the annual zombie pub crawl rolls its headless way through the streets of Oak Bluffs on Saturday night, gathering at 7 p.m. at the Tabernacle.

On the big day, Monday, Oct. 31, in addition to trick-or-treating there is a party and haunted hay rides at the Agricultural Hall in West Tisbury from 6 to 8 p.m. The hay rides head to the town cemetery, deep in the dark, dark woods, where all manner of frights await.

For safety’s sake the street closings on Halloween night in Vineyard Haven are from 4 to 9 p.m. and include William street, from Spring Street to Woodlawn Avenue; Spring street, from Look street to Main street; Franklin street, from Clough Lane to Spring street. Center street, Church street, Drummer Lane and Colonial Lane will blocked at Main Street to prevent vehicles from traveling up toward Franklin street.

Oak Bluffs will close Vineyard avenue for trick-or-treating, from Dukes County avenue to Norris avenue from 5 to 8:30 p.m.
