When Elizabeth Straton lived on Martha’s Vineyard she taught Spanish and music. Every spring she would hold a reception for her music students at the Katharine Cornell Theatre so they could display their newly acquired skills to parents and friends. The events were student tour de forces of piano, singing, violin.

But this Saturday, Nov. 12, it is the teacher who takes center stage when Ms. Straton returns to the Vineyard for a concert to celebrate the release of her fourth album, Green Envy. The album was composed in the U.S. and Spain, where she lived for three years after leaving the Vineyard. She had received a grant from a German foundation to begin work on a children’s opera.

“The funds allowed me to live in Spain for three years and start the project,” Ms. Straton said. It also gave her time to work on Green Envy, her first album since becoming a mother.

On the album she is accompanied, as on all her albums, by her sisters and bass player Scott Petito, who played for many years with the Fugs. At Saturday’s concert she will also be joined onstage by Vineyarder Jimmy Parr on percussion.

“He usually does sound for me but for this concert he said I’m playing drums on this one,” Ms. Straton said.

The group will be completed with the help of Robert Eglielski.

“He’s a lawyer and a jazz guitarist,” Ms. Straton said, adding that “he adds a different element, not as folkie as in the past.”

The concert begins at 8 p.m. Tickets are $25 per person, with children under 12 free. Ms. Straton said she is excited to be back at the Katharine Cornell Theatre after her time away. She currently lives in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

“I just love playing there with those Stanley Murphy murals on the wall.”
