Paulo DeOliveira was sworn in Thursday morning at the Dukes County courthouse as the county’s new Register of Deeds.

Mr. DeOliveira, 32, was elected to the office last week in a special election to replace retiring register Dianne Powers. He was previously the assistant Register of Deeds.

On Thursday Ms. Powers joined the crowd of family, friends, and courthouse employees in the courtroom to watch as Mr. DeOliveira was sworn-in by clerk of courts Joseph E. Sollitto Jr.

Mr. DeOliveira’s wife, Justine Shemeth DeOlivera, and their children Mateo, 5, and Luiza, 2, stood with him for the short ceremony.

After the ceremony it was right to work for the new Register of Deeds, who was busy recording Thursday morning. Later in the day he was headed to Boston for another formality, a swearing-in with the Land Court.
