Chilmark is sure to look more like winter when this gusty wind diminishes. It has been blowing all night and sadly promises to tear away the lovely yellow and orange foliage that we have been enjoying on our roadsides. However, we quickly adjust to life in the next season. Scalloping started this week and as I write the boats are making $22 a pound, so get ready. Scallops have been scarce in other towns so far.
A pair of loons were fishing in Menemsha harbor this week and flocks of migrating ducks can be seen along the ocean shore.
Please be aware that on Dec. 5 Chilmark will hold a special town meeting at the community center at 7:30 p.m. If you are not a registered voter you may register at town hall Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 8 p.m. All town meetings are important and your vote is always important. Be sure to come out and vote on our town’s activities.
Samantha Bunker will be joining her family for the Thanksgiving holiday. She is a student at Clark University in Worcester. No doubt she will be joined by other students who seem to enjoy this break from their studies to get home to Chilmark.
The Chilmark music potluck will take place at the community center this coming Saturday evening beginning at 5:30 p.m.
Now we move on to more indoor activities for the holidays coming up. The Chilmark Community Church will host a flea market at the community center on Dec. 1 for their seasonal fundraiser. If you wish to set up at the market please contact the church at chilmarkchurch@gmail.com.
The Chilmark library will host their annual holiday party at the library on Dec. 14 from 4:30 to 6 p.m. with crafts, food, and general holiday merriment. The library will be conducting their winter book sale from Dec. 12 through Jan. 5 during regular library hours.
Santa will be making his annual visit to Chilmark on Dec. 20 this year. He will visit a festive party arranged for him and for all the children of Chilmark by the Chilmark Volunteer Fireman’s Association. This group that dates back to the 1920s has hosted the children’s Christmas party for many years. It is hoped that, in deference to the three women who currently serve as volunteer firefighters, the group might be known as the Chilmark Volunteer Firefighter’s Association. Just saying.
And, while I am in this zone, let me remind you that the state of Massachusetts has declared April 8 as Equal Pay Day.
There is a lot of activity taking place in Menemsha channel these days as dredging begins again. The barges are in place to start pumping the spill onto the Lobsterville beach.
The work going on at the foot of North Road in Menemsha is required for the U.S. Coast Guard water supply.
The Martha’s Vineyard Partnership for Health is still looking for volunteers from all towns to become leaders for My Life My Health, a program designed to help people manage chronic conditions and more. The free four-day training program will be held Dec. 5, 6, 12, and 13 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Please call 508-627-5797 ext. 114 or email ksamays@ihimv.org if you have questions or the time to volunteer for this worthwhile program.
The funeral service for the late Marjorie Hancock Phillips will be at 11 a.m. at the Oak Grove Cemetery in Vineyard Haven on Nov. 26. She was much loved by many across the Island.
Please accept my best wishes for your Thanksgiving holiday. And, as always, my wish for you is that somebody else does the dishes!
