West Tisbury firefighters quelled a backyard brushfire Wednesday afternoon at a West Tisbury home. No injuries were reported.

Fire chief Manuel Estrella 3rd said the entire West Tisbury fire crew responded to a fire that started in a pile of leaves in the backyard of Clarence A. (Trip) Barnes's home on State Road in North Tisbury. Four trucks and two pumpers also responded to the scene.

Chief Estrella said the brush fire spread to a boat and a fence on the back edge of Mr. Barnes's property. The boat, which he estimated was about 15 to 18 feet long, was destroyed, he said.

The fire was reported at about 4:30 p.m. Chief Estrella said it took about half an hour to knock down the fire. "It worked out just great," he said.

Mr. Barnes said he was raking leaves into a large pile in his backyard and backed over the leaves with a 1985 truck. Exhaust from the truck ignited the fire, he said.

“It looked a lot scarier than it was, but it was still pretty scary,” Mr. Barnes said, noting he had several calls from people concerned that a house was on fire. He said there was no damage to homes and no injuries. The fiberglass boat belonged to someone who used to live on the property, he said.

“Nobody was hurt, no serious damage done,” Mr. Barnes said. “The fire department was terrific.”
