Edgartown selectmen heard concerns Monday about a narrow sidewalk near the Edgartown school.

Martha’s Vineyard superintendent of schools Matthew D’Andrea, joined by Edgartown school principal John Stevens and members of the school board, told selectmen that parents have had concerns about the safety of students walking to school along Robinson Road. The road runs past the school and the new Edgartown Public Library, connecting Pease’s Point Way South and Edgartown-West Tisbury Road.

The sidewalk is narrow and low to the ground, Mr. D’Andrea said, and at between three and four feet wide it falls short of state guidelines that sidewalks should be four feet wide. He added that the road does not connect all the way to the bike path and sidewalk along Edgartown-West Tisbury Road.

“It would be great if we could widen the sidewalk, but we’re open to problem-solving with the intent of making it safer for our students,” Mr. D’Andrea said.

Highway superintendent Stuart Fuller said he had been notified about the problem and the road is in the department’s five-year plan, with repairs slated for the 2018 fiscal year.

As a short term fix Mr. Fuller said the department could extend the sidewalk 15 feet to meet the bike path, and then in the spring of 2018 the department could work on rebuilding the sidewalk.

“We’re preparing for a lot of work in the downtown area that are higher priorities,” he said,

Selectmen agreed to the proposal and asked Mr. Fuller to keep Mr. Stevens up to date about the project.

In other business, selectmen praised Mr. Fuller as they approved his annual review. “You’ve really got a lot on the table but you’re doing a good job,” board chairman Margaret Serpa said.

Selectmen also agreed to extend the seasonal liquor license for the Tin Hangar, the new bar and restaurant near the airport, until Dec. 31. The extension covers the restaurant owners as they wait for their year-round beer and wine license to come back from the state Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission.

The board approved a brief winter closure for The Terrace at the Charlotte Inn, from Jan. 2 to Feb. 10, and read a notice from the fire department that there will be a live fire training on Sunday, Dec. 4 at a home on Muskoday Drive. Portions of Crocker Drive will be closed to through traffic during the day.
