Dr. David A. Halsey, who joins the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital staff this week as a full-time orthopedic surgeon, was recently named physician of the year by the Vermont Medical Society.

Before joining the Vineyard hospital, Dr. Halsey was director of the joint replacement program at the University of Vermont Medical Center’s Orthopedics and Rehabilitation Center. He also was a professor at the University of Vermont College of Medicine in Burlington, Vt.

Dr. Halsey has served in numerous leadership roles in his field, including most recently as second vice president of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) board of directors. He specializes in patient-centric care and surgical risk reduction strategies with a focus on sports medicine, hip and knee replacement, minimal incision shoulder surgery, and reconstructive surgery of the wrist, hand, ankle and foot, a hospital press release said.

“His expertise in the field of orthopaedics and rehabilitation is second to none,” said hospital chief executive officer Joe Woodin in the release.
