A Vineyard Haven man is recovering at a Boston hospital after he was pulled from the bottom of a pool early Monday morning. The incident happened during a holiday party at the home of Gerret Conover on Davis Lane in Edgartown.

According to a police report, Mr. Conover and a guest, Lou Paciello, noticed the man lying on the bottom of the pool at about 1 a.m. Mr. Conover dove into the water, about seven feet deep, and pulled the man out of the pool, police said.

The man was identified by police as Attacisio Chiabai, of Skiff’s Lane in Vineyard Haven.

Mr. Chiabai was unconscious and unresponsive when police arrived, but officers detected a faint pulse, and administered first aid until Edgartown EMS arrived a few moments later.

“Conover stated that he had hosted a large holiday party at his home for friends and business associates,” Officer Ryan Ruley wrote in his police report. “He did not know the identity of the party involved but believed he was a subcontractor for a company he uses. He stated that he was poolside with Lou Paciello when they observed what they thought to be a dark towel at the bottom of the pool. They then realized it may not be a towel and possible a person. They dove under the water and removed the male party. After received help to get him to the deck, Paciello attempted chest compressions.”

Mr. Chiabai was transported to the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. He was flown off the Island to the Massachusetts General Hospital by Medflight helicopter. He was listed in good condition at that hospital on Wednesday afternoon.
