Wild weather continues to stalk us in New England, just when you thought it was almost safe to get back in the water again. Wild wind, canceled boats, snow, ice, sideways rain, I don’t want any post cards, posts or phone calls from our so-called friends in Barbados, Aruba, Mexico, anywhere but here. Fair-weather friends all.

Key to New England weather is New England sports. I have two stories from off-Island but they are right next door from Connecticut so I need to point this news out. First of all, young Logan Schoenhardt of Simsbury, Conn., a devoted Patriots fan and forever friend of our QB Tom Brady, passed on Monday night. This brave 10-year-old has dealt with brain cancer since he was three years old. Tom and Logan developed a fine friendship. Logan was appointed the honorary captain in our last game against the Rams. He proudly led our team out of the tunnel. And he lived to see our team earn its fifth ring. You cannot find a better fan than Logan. May he rest in peace.

The other sports news from our sister state is amazing. The indefatigable Huskies womens basketball team from University of Connecticut has won an unprecedented 100 games in a row. The fans in the stands went nuts and rightly so. These hard-working women have brought us a lot of winter relief. Go, Huskies.

Martha’s Vineyard Community Services never rests in its mission to keep us safe, occupied and happy. The MV Family Center is holding a three-hour certification CPR course Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at the MVCS campus. Pre-registration is required. Call 508-687-9182. It’s always important to be certified in saving lives.

There is also a dads’ playgroup on Saturday, Feb. 18 at the Tisbury School gym. There will be planned activities and open gym time. A great way to spend a wintry Saturday with your kids.

And you all know our famous retired but not, not working Gene Baer? Our community services is featuring his art work in an exhibit at the Chicken Alley Thrift Shop in Vineyard Haven. Gene always has a new and colorful project up his sleeve.

In other art news the scintillating ceramicist, Washington Ledesma, has his fantastic works featured in Art in the Stacks at our Vineyard Haven library during regular library hours. I daresay Gene and Washington are two of the most creative and innovative artists we know. Check out their shows.

The birthday bandwagon pulls along Jill LaPiana and Colin Kennedy on Feb. 17; Feb. 18 is a party for Paul Howes, Charlotte Strople and AJ Ewart; Feb. 19 smiles on Chris Paffendorf, Michael James Moore and Noreen Bettencourt; Feb. 20 belongs to Laura Artru, Ben Davey and Michael Dowling; Feb. 21 is claimed by Marie Boas, Nisa Kontje, Michael Cecilio and James Holenko; Feb. 22 is shared by good old George Washington and Thomas Dommerich Dunn; and on Feb. 23 David Gardella and Reid MacPherson take the cake. Many happy returns.
