That was the storm that wasn’t, or was it? High winds still caused mayhem. Boats had to run on a trip-by-trip basis. The silver lining is the rain washed away all the snow that fell last Friday. I am in the Old Country seeing at least eight inches of snow. It just seems wrong to have changed the clocks and now have snow and every evidence of winter out there.

Once more, with feeling. Those of you in Florida, the Turks and Caicos, Aruba, Costa Rica, Arizona, and you know who you are, are not to send us photos of you by the pool sipping mint juleps, beer, wine or anything celebratory. You have been warned. What sadism is it in you all to do this to us? And I notice most of these posts come on our worst weather days. Now stop or we will unfriend you.

The Island Wide Youth Collaborative is holding a fathers’ playgroup on Saturday, March 18 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at the Tisbury school gym. All are welcome. There will be facilitated activities as well as free gym time.

Kathy Glodis, one of our town’s resident artists, sent me some photos of an art show currently running at the Featherstone Center for the Arts. The center is open for viewing from noon to 4 p.m. daily. The show has the work of 25 Island artists creating a visual protest of today’s political climate. Art entertains, but art also makes a statement. Stop by.

Our library was able to hold its talk by Dr. Elliott Dacher on Tuesday evening in spite of the dire predictions for a blizzard. On Tuesday March 21 at 7 p.m. Betty Burton is presenting a talk by Phyllis Chinlard called A Story of Love, Art, and Dementia. Phyllis wears at least two professional hats, a worker in the field of aging and a documentary filmmaker. Phyllis has lovingly and boldly recorded her husband, photographer Ray Witlin, as he faces this all too common challenge. All are welcome and the program is free.

Our library director, Amy Ryan, is preparing for a very exciting new project. Or perhaps I should say old project? It is a blast from the past back to the 1960s. Apparently, in January of 1967, Dorothy Howell’s sixth grade class at the Tisbury school buried a time capsule at the library, to be opened in 50 years. If you want to attend or assist in the planning for the opening of the capsule, call Amy at 508-696-4210. The date we are planning for is April 29. Do any of you kiddies even remember what you put in there?

We wrap the month up with our usual mini book sale at the library on Saturday, May 18 in the program room. New hours for browsing and shopping are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. I am always thrilled to see what my former students are doing. Lovely Siobhan Elizabeth Frances, who grew up to study IT and lives on the Cape has had a gorgeous photo shoot by photographer Steve Crafts. I am sure in the future I will not just be seeing her photos posted on Facebook but on magazine covers everywhere. She was a delight when I first met her as a sixth grader but, holy cow. We wish her well in her career.

Our sincere condolences to the family and friends of one of the nicest men you will ever meet, Garry Lewis. Word has reached us that Garry passed. I shall never forget how wonderfully kind this young man was. Rest in peace, Garry.

The birthday bandwagon pulls along Marc Samuel Natichioni and Julio Silva on March 17. Do you think they will dress in green for St. Patrick’s Day? March 18 is shared by Chris Kennedy, John Franzago and Zachary Lawrence Donald; March 20 shines on J.D. Wild, Deb Chickering, Dianne Norton, Chuck Redington and Seth Edwin Donald; March 21 is a party for Barbara Dacey, Julie Robinson, Maureen Whiting and Michael Yates; and on March 22 Annette Anthony, Gabriel Nascimento and Elizabeth Bennett take the cake. Many happy returns.
