The Vineyard Montessori School is growing, with the recent purchase of land to expand the Vineyard Haven campus.

According to a press release the pre-kindergarten through sixth grade school will build a new campus to meet growing education needs and a growing number of students. Long-term plans for the campus include renovating or replacing the existing building, expanding elementary classrooms, and creating an outdoor learning area.

Real estate records show the school purchased land on Seasonwein Way for $592,000 on March 15.

The land purchase was the result of strategic planning by the school’s board of trustees, the press release said, and the school has received grants from Starr Snead’s Advancement Connections and the Vineyard Fund for Board Development and Education which is part of The Permanent Endowment for Martha’s Vineyard. Ms. Snead will work with Vineyard Montessori School for long-rang planning, the board said.

While the new campus is being developed, the first through sixth grade program will relocate from the existing Main street location to Camp Jabberwocky on Greenwood avenue in Vineyard Haven starting in September.

“The short-term move also allows us time to strategically plan out our campus on our new land,” head of school Deborah Jernegan said.

The school was founded in 1975 at Arrowhead Farm in West Tisbury by a group of parents, and now enrolls an average of 54 students each year. For more information visit vineyardmontessori.com.
