There is just so much going on, we didn’t have a long winter’s nap at all. This event is a bit distant but will be on us before we know it. This is about my young friend who just celebrated a birthday. Chris Kennedy, who I first met at Tisbury school, will participate in his 3rd Annual Run to Home Base fundraiser presented by New Balance. This is a special event that celebrates our military heroes. It raises money for Home Base, a partnership of the Red Sox foundation and Massachusetts General Hospital to raise money to heal the invisible wounds of our post 9/11 veterans and their families. The foundation deals with combat stress, brain injuries, resettling into civilian life. Chris will be headed to Boston for the run on July 15. The participants run through scenic Boston and end by crossing historic home plate at Fenway Park. Chris has pledged to raise $750 but his personal goal is more than that.
You can help Chris Kennedy and this wonderful service by logging on to runtohomebase.org/2017RunToHomeBase/ChrisKennedy. Chris, get your running shoes ready.
Much closer in our future is the Veterans Outreach Program Easter Egg Hunt at the Martha’s Vineyard Community Services campus at 111 Edgartown Road on Saturday, April 15 from 10 am to 11:30 a.m. The hunt begins promptly at 10 a.m. There will also be arts and crafts and healthy snacks. Carol is so good at keeping me informed about the services and community of the First Baptist Church on William street. On April 16 there will be a 9:15 a.m. beach service at Eastville. Return to the Parish House at 9:45 a.m. for a continental breakfast. Traditional service led by Rev. Dr. Leo Christian will commence at 11 a.m. I hope the weather complies.
Remember the artistic dynamo and teacher, Cheryl Piatelli? Where else but the internet would I learn that she is playing and singing at a lovely restaurant at the Grand Canyon on April 22? If any of you are out that way do check it out and say hello. My mother remembered Cheryl’s parents from the Bronx.
Everyone seems so sad about an impending sale of Offshore Ale. It looks like the owners really want to turn it over to like-minded people. We thank them for their years of service and expect this to still be a gathering place on this Island. I shall never forget how much farmer Elisha Smith loved to be there, have dinner, talk to his countless friends, and enjoy a live musical performance. I sure hope this continues.
Our library is hosting its new, improved mini-book sale on Saturday, April 15. The hours are now expanded from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Get a head start on your summer reading. The money funds the many programs offered by the Friends of the Vineyard Haven Library.
On Tuesday, April 18 the 7 p.m. film in our program room shows Hidden Figures, the story of the three brilliant women who worked for NASA and helped make John Glenn’s historic orbit possible. Art in the Stacks presents the oil and mixed media work of Nina Gomez Gordon this month.
The birthday bandwagon pulls along Rita McKenna Kean and Emily Brown Friday; April 15 is shared by Joe Ojile, Shirley Kennedy and Weny Francis; April 16 is for Jenny Painter Seward and Evan Rogers; April 17 shines on Irene Miller; April 18 sees Max Clark Balco, Lynne Whiting, Alexander Schultz and Laurie Jennings age gracefully. And on April 19 Eleanor Hebert, and Bob Tankard take the cake. Many happy returns.
