A Vineyard Haven businessman charged with rape was found not guilty on all counts Friday by a superior court jury.

A jury of three men and nine women deliberated for about just over four hours Friday before acquitting Carlos G. Stevenson, 50, on one charge of rape and five counts of indecent assault and battery on a child under 14.

Mr. Stevenson tearfully embraced his family and attorneys after the verdicts were read.

He is the owner of Mosher Photo in Vineyard Haven. He was indicted in October 2014 on charges relating to alleged incidents dating back to the early 2000s, when the alleged victim was 10 or 11 years old.

The trial unfolded over about three days of testimony at the Edgartown district court. During opening arguments Tuesday, Cape and Islands assistant district attorney Laura Marshard said the alleged incidents took place at Mr. Stevenson’s home and at a neighbor’s house when the alleged victim was pet-sitting.

In her opening argument defense attorney Janice Bassil said her client was not guilty and questioned the alleged victim’s reliability.

The alleged victim, now 26, testified in court as well.

On Friday afternoon in the courtroom Hon. Mitchell Kaplan, who presided over the case, thanked the jury for their service. “These are very emotional cases,” he said. “Thank you for your hard work.”

Ms. Bassil told the Gazette: “These were extremely difficult cases. I’m just so relieved the jury saw the truth of it. I’m just so relieved.”
