Two New Bedford men have begun serving prison terms for charges related to drug trafficking on the Vineyard. Aaron M. Watkins, 29, and Desmond J. Roderiques, 25, pleaded guilty last month in Dukes County superior court on charges dating to October 2015.

Mr. Watkins and Mr. Roderiques were arrested by members of the Martha’s Vineyard Drug Task Force that year after they drove off a Steamship Authority ferry in Vineyard Haven. Police said a search of the car and the men found 53 grams of heroin, 23 grams of cocaine, and several containers of marijuana. The drugs were concealed in the engine compartment of the car, police said, and had a total street value of $12,000.

Police said at the time that they also believed the two men and others used a home on Hye Way in Edgartown to deal drugs on the Island. Police said a search of the home found 80 grams of marijuana, methadone pills, and drug paraphernalia.

On April 28 Mr. Watkins pleaded guilty on trafficking in heroin/morphine/opium and trafficking in cocaine. Hon. C.J. Moriarty sentenced him to three and a half to five years at MCI Cedar Junction, a maximum security facility in Walpole, on the first count. He was sentenced to the same amount of time, to be served concurrently, on the second count. Mr. Watkins will not be prosecuted on a charge of conspiracy to violate drug laws.

Mr. Roderiques pleaded guilty April 21 on amended charges of possessing to distribute a class A drug (heroin) and possessing to distribute a class B drug (cocaine).

He was sentenced to consecutive sentences of two to two and a half years at MCI Cedar Junction on the first count and two years on the second count. He will not be prosecuted on a third count, a charge of conspiracy to violate drug law.

Both men turned themselves in May 12 at the Edgartown courthouse to begin their sentences.
