This year’s theme for the Art of Conservation contest sponsored by the Vineyard Conservation Society was Discovery. Artists were invited to essentially discover anew the Vineyard and share it with their artwork.

First prizes went to Grace Kenney for a sculpture titled Attire, which includes a castoff tire overlaid with a weaving of recycled fibers, and David Sweitzer for a sculpture built from bits of white paper folded origami-style.

Special distinction prizes went to photographs by Pandora Bassett, Cameron Moore, Kayla Oliver, Lexus Pate, Olivia Schroeder and Emma Searle.

Judges this year were Mollie Doyle, Ben Scott and Liz Witham.

All winners will be honored at a reception, exhibit and awards ceremony at the Martha’s Vineyard Film Center on Beach Road in Vineyard Haven on Saturday, May 27 at 3 p.m. The winning artwork will be on exhibit in the Film Center lobby for two weeks, and at the Vineyard Haven Mocha Motts during the month of August.

After the ceremony, there will be a screening of the documentary A Plastic Ocean.
