We are not the only town to have a picnic, even if it has to have a rain date. After the formation of their town 125 years ago, West Tisbury held its first Town Picnic last weekend at the Ag Hall. Food, beverages, games, camaraderie. Doing what we do best in season.
This is always a poignant time of year at the graduations. Our best to the MVRHS Class of 2017. Following tradition, their ceremony was last Sunday at the Tabernacle. A sea of purple and white, all young flowers ready to bloom. The Charter School always hosts an impressive graduation and party too. I have had the pleasure to attend it and enjoy it. The graduations at our various eighth grades were impressive. I cheer the kindergartners on in what is the beginning of a future of graduations and happy days.
Catch it if you can, on Friday, June 16 at 8 p.m., the 39th annual Bloomsday night, presented by John Crelan, will be at the Katharine Cornell Theatre. Tickets are $20 at the door or in advance at Bunch of Grapes Bookstore. You will enjoy your most talented neighbors doing what they love to do. Phil Dietterich and Molly Conole will handle the music. A cellist and singer will perform. Gerry Yukevich performs Araby from Dubliners. Pam Schnatterly returns as Molly from Ulysses. It never fails to amaze. Thank you, John.
Another reminder for this weekend is the annual Father’s Day Barbecue at the First Baptist Church on William street. Dinner is Saturday evening at the Parish House on William. Take-out is available.
Vineyard Sound is back and Martha’s Vineyard has them. The a cappella group of 20 years is back for the summer and performing around the Island. They have already had a few concerts. For their future schedule visit vineyardsound.org. Our summer entertainment is coming together quite nicely.
Looks like JB Blau has everything in place, dotting his “i”s and crossing his “t”s to begin liquor beverage service at Copper Wok. I am hoping for the best for everyone. Imagine, on a Monday night you could have dinner and a drink, then head over to the Vineyard Playhouse for a play reading. I just love the opportunities for the arts in my town.
The annual Photography Club show is at Art in the Stacks at our library. Please visit before the end of June. The Photography Club meetings are the first Thursday of every month at 6 p.m. at the library. As I understand it, even if you are only here for the season, you may join any of our clubs.
The library hosts its monthly mini-booksale from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., new expanded hours, on Saturday, June 17 in the program room. This has got to be my favorite sale on-Island. Air conditioning, great books, great people. That same room will be the site of the screening of La La Land on Tuesday night, June 20 at 7 p.m. Lemonade and popcorn of course. Bring your visitors.
Get well wishes to a dear friend, Marganna Roberts. May she be out of bed and running around again very soon.
The birthday bandwagon pulls along Gina Jannace on June 17; June 18 is a party for Peg Jackson, Julio Bueno, Antoe Mitchell and Benjamin Eli Tichauer; June 20 shines on Laura Kimball, Khalil Khalil and John O’Donnell; and on June 22 Michele Alton and Pam Bahal take the cake. Many happy returns.
