It has been rather foggy over the past week with overcast skies and rain. Not the beach weather everyone has anticipated. Instead of complaining, enjoy the abundance of beautiful flowers, green trees and summer lawns. A bob white is calling in the neighborhood, having been missed over the past few years. School is out for the summer.

Summer is in full swing at the Aquinnah Public Library. Story time is on Saturday, June 24 at 10:30 a.m. and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. kids craft: painted rocks. On Tuesday, June 27 at 5:30 p.m. for Islanders Read the Classics Nancy Aronie will present Be Here Now by Ram Dass.

The annual Howes House Art Show and Sale begins Today from noon to 4 p.m. and continues on Saturday, June 24, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The show features watercolors and drawings from the Howes House Friday afternoon painting group with Nancy Cabot as facilitator.

Over the past week our family enjoyed the kindness and generosity of USCG Station Menemsha Senior Chief Robert Riemer and his wife Kara and their daughters Emma and Nora. On Saturday night yours truly enjoyed the graciousness and kindness of USCG Station Menemsha Chief Robert Parent, his wife Valerie and their sons Robert, Eli and Isaac as we gathered at their home to learn the gender of Adam and Meghan Smith’s baby due in October. As we headed to the beach at West Chop, the young Parent boys, assisted by Olivia Seawell, all squirted pink on Adam and Meghan’s white shirts. And a baby girl it will be! A fun evening was had by all in attendance.

Neil Gross has arrived for the summer at the family home on Rose Meadow Way. Adam Gross is delighted that Lisa Gross has arrived from California for a summer visit as well.

Kyle William Killebrew, grandson of John O. and Gabi Vanderhoop, was one of five at the University of Reno to receive a prestigious award in the psychology department for outstanding achievement in his field. This award, which includes a $2,000 stipend, normally given each year, had not been awarded for five years. Kyle has his master’s degree and is working toward his doctorate in psychology with emphasis in cognitive and brain sciences. He is a research assistant and is teaching his fourth class at the university. Needless to say they are all so proud of Kyle and his achievements.

All are invited to the Old South Road Neighborhood Association’s 15th annual Fourth of July parade and treasure hunt. The event starts at 10 a.m. with face painting, coffee and donuts at the Goldfield-Mannion home at 5 Old South Road. Floats will line up at that time, and the parade kicks off at 11 a.m. sharp with the National Anthem by Arlen Roth. A treasure hunt on Philbin Beach follows the parade. Please park on Moshup Trail. Donations of flags, toys and treasure, are encouraged and please invite neighbors and friends with children and families.

Corinna Majno and her husband Ken Kaufman are at the Majno family home on Mariner’s Way. Corinna is busy with her seaweed art and has shows each weekend at their home off Lighthouse Road. Stop in and enjoy. Her work is also available at the Wayward Wampum shop of Jason Widdiss.

Kathryn Myrtle has arrived for the summer, staying with her aunt Jamie Sue Vanderhoop and her husband Durwood and their sons Sowunahsh, Kuhpay, and Matahquhs. Kathyrn is working at Cliffhangers for the summer. Grandparents Ron and Joanne Spears arrived for a one-week stay with the family.

Noah and Robbie Manning and their fifth grade classes at West Tisbury School were in Boston Tuesday for a duck boat tour. Noah’s Little League team, the LA Dodgers, will be in the finals!

Get well wishes to fellow Vineyard Gazette columnist Jane Slater, who underwent orthopedic surgery at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital on Tuesday. After a brief delay, the surgery was finally performed.

Congratulations to David Elliot Vanderhoop and Carrie on the birth of their daughter Elizabeth Faith Vanderhoop born May 31 in Prince Rupert, British Columbia.

Happy first anniversary wishes to Joshua and Emily Hughes on June 23. Happy 36th anniversary wishes to Barry and Dorothy Sullivan on June 27.

Happy birthday wishes this week to Tnisha Chandler on June 24 as she shares the day with Damon Q. Runyan. Robert Schiller will celebrate on June 25 as will Carly Simon. Edward Fantasia will party on June 26 as will Judy Lana Peterson. Kathie Carroll and Anna Cotton share the day on June 27. Beth Mayhew parties on the 28th. Marilyn Maynard will observe her special day on June 29.
