Summer has finally arrived. Warmer temperatures, days of sunshine and great boating and beach weather. The striped bass are running. Honeysuckle is in bloom as are the rosa rugosa along the beaches. Have a safe and happy Fourth of July.

Welcome home to U.S. Navy AME2 (AW) Christopher P. Manning from his recent deployment aboard the USS Carl Vinson in the Pacific for the past six months. We are incredibly proud of Chris and his accomplishments. Awaiting to hear about his six months at sea.

The 15th Annual Aquinnah 4th of July parade and treasure hunt sponsored by the Old South Road Association will start with face painting at 10 a.m. followed by the parade at 11 a.m. sharp. Please park on Moshup Trail. As always, the reviewing stand will be in front of the Tom and Chris Murphy home.

Enjoy the music every Tuesday evening at the Aquinnah Public Library from 5 to 6 p.m. with the youth music series on the deck, sponsored by mvyradio and Alex’s Place at the YMCA of Martha’s Vineyard. The first event will take place July 11. Free and open to all. At the library this week, on Saturday, July 1 at 10 a.m. is the kick off for summer reading at the Ag Hall. Jungle Jim will be performing. Also on Saturday, July 1 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. is kids craft: summer coloring. On July 4 the library will be closed due to the Independence Day holiday.

The Aquinnah Cultural Center is open Wednesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., offering tours of the Vanderhoop Homestead, a 19th century Wampanoag farmhouse containing much of the original furniture and household items from the builder of the home and subsequent generations of the Vanderhoop family. The Lobsterville neighborhood is welcoming summer residents. Allen and Darrell Razdow have arrived.

Mac Haskell, his wife Trisha, and their daughter Claire are in residence. Daughter Devon is a camp counselor this year and remained in Florida.

Max and Cheryl Batzer have arrived and will be joined by their sons Lucas and Travis over the holiday weekend.

Welcome to Aquinnah police officer Charles Duquette of Norton, a graduate of South Suburban Police Institute in Foxboro. He is also a behavioral health technician in the United States Army Reserves.

The Aquinnah Police Department welcomes back Michael Lecesse for his third summer on the police force. On occasion we see him during the winter as well. He is always there for yours truly when our escape artist canine Rhett decides to tour the town.

At U.S. Coast Guard Station Menemsha, welcome to BM2 Joshua Boytek of Portsmouth, Va. who has just arrived from Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. And welcome to SN Daniel J. Gonzalez of San Juan, Puerto Rico who has arrived from Cape May, N.J. Welcome to the family of USCG BM2 Adam R. Smith and his wife, Meghan, who have arrived from Pennsylvania for a 10-day visit and tour of the Vineyard.

Happy birthday wishes this week to my fellow MV Hospital coworker Kenneth Ivory who will observe a milestone on July 1. Elaine Vanderhoop and Stephanie Devine share the day on July 1 as will Lyle Vanderhoop, who will be four years old. Robbie Manning will be 11 years old on July 3, and shares the day with Marissa Kaeka and Deb Ratcliff. My dear friend Jane Anderson will party on July 4 and shares the day with Mae Alice Baird, who will be 13 years old, and Michael Norkus. My friend Wiet Bacheller will observe a milestone on July 6. Jeremy Burke will party on July 6. Neighbor Harold Wolozin will be 97 on July 7 and shares the day with Steve Yaffe and my middle granddaughter Marianne Spiller.
