Aoife O’Donovan has built her career on American traditions as both a solo performer and as one third of the folk supergroup I’m With Her. The other members are Sara Watkins and Sarah Jarosz and together the group creates mind-bending harmonies that are sometimes tight and sweet and sometimes lofty and full. The trio is coming to Edgartown’s Old Whaling Church to stomp the floorboards on Wednesday, July 12.

The performance is a fundraiser for Island radio station WMVY.

“When the opportunity came to support the station and play a show on Martha’s Vineyard, we couldn’t pass that up,” Ms. O’Donovan said by phone on Tuesday. The musician is from Boston and her father is “a radio guy” with WGBH.

“WMVY is a an incredible radio station,” Ms. O’Donovan said. “It’s really important for artists to nurture their relationships with their stations and with the listeners of the stations.”

Relationships with the women of American folk and bluegrass music sustain the group as well. Ms. O’Donovan gave a nod to living legends Emmylou Harris, Dolly Parton and Linda Ronstadt. “The really cool thing about this genre of music is that all those people are still making music. We run into them at festivals.”

WMVY also sees the value of kinship in the music industry. “The connection with I’m With Her is the connection the radio station has with each of the original performers,” said Barbara Dacey, director of worldwide programming for WMVY. “We have supported each of them in their solo careers and have been huge fans of them.”

An WMVY board member and fan of the group is responsible for bringing I’m With Her to the Old Whaling Church. The group didn’t need much convincing to come to the Vineyard. There was the worthy cause of supporting the public radio station that has supported them, and then there was the prime venue.

“When you’re a musician, you have to adapt to playing in a dingy bar or a concert hall or an outdoor stage,” Ms. O’Donovan said. “I’m confident in saying that being in a beautiful old whaling church on Martha’s Vineyard will positively contribute to our vibe and our performance,” she added with a laugh.

I’m With Her performs at the Old Whaling Church on Wednesday, July 12 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $40 and $100 for premium seats, which includes an after-show reception, available at TicketsMV.com or at the group’s site, ImWithHerBand.com
