Chilmark town officials said Friday they believed the source of stray voltage in the water at Menemsha has been located and addressed. The area will remain closed to swimming for now.

Town wiring inspector Cole Powers told the Gazette he had found a sub-panel from the transient dock that was not grounded to the main panel.

Electricians from Daseco ran new wiring back to the main panel on Thursday, Mr. Powers said.

“By them installing that jumper, or conductor from the main panel to the sub-panel, that basically neutralized those transient voltages,” Mr. Powers said. He has inspected the conductor and said it is working as intended.

“I gave them approval last night around 5:30, 6 p.m. I deemed it safe to conduct business as usual in that vicinity.”

Selectman Jim Malkin said while the problem appears to be fixed, the town is nevertheless taking a cautious approach and will keep the area known as Crab Corner closed to swimmers and waders.

“I am very cautious about permitting people to go back in the water unless we’re 100 per cent sure,” Mr. Malkin said.

He could not say when the area might reopen.
