After days of heat and humidity, the rain on Monday finally broke the temperature that had been in the 80s to a welcome coolness. Cooler weather for sleeping on Monday night although not a beach day on Monday or Tuesday.

At Aquinnah Public Library on Saturday, July 29 at 10:30 a.m. is a special story time. Olivia the Pig will visit. Kids can take a photo with Olivia, give her a hug or high five, and listen to her funny stories. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. there will be a paper Olivia craft. On Tuesday, August 1 5:00 is Music on the Deck. See some of the Island’s young musical talent.

Chilmark Fire Department will host their annual Backyard Bash on Wednesday, August 2 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Chilmark Community Center. This is their annual fundraiser for high school scholarships, the annual children’s events, and the CFD Association Relief Fund. Join in the activities including the cookout, sale of CFD tee shirts and sweatshirts, a raffle, a 50/50, and a silent auction. Enjoy the music of Dock Dance Band.

On Saturday, August 5, family and friends will gather for a fundraiser for Chilmark fire chief David Norton, who has been under medical care and is required to rest for the next few months. Join in the festivities to support David during his illness and recuperation. The fun begins at 7 p.m. and the silent auction will be from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the PA Club on Vineyard Avenue in Oak Bluffs. Donations are $20 at the door. Please bring an appetizer or dessert to share. Entertainment will be provided following the auction.

Risk and the Marine Environments at Sargent Gallery in Aquinnah continues through August 4. Artists include Caroline Bagenal, Robert Perkins, and Karen Philippi and other locally and national renowned artists. Discussion and story-telling by artist and writer Robert Perkins on Friday, July 28 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Light refreshments.

Judy Belain and her friend Tony have been at her home for the past three weeks. They will return to Wayland for a for a bit and then back to Aquinnah for three weeks in August.

Dr. Joseph Harrington and his wife Evelyn returned to Andover on Monday after spending the weekend visiting her son Jason Widdiss and his clan. They were accompanied by Joe’s daughter Heather and her son Shante who were visiting from New Mexico.

Coast Guardsman Colin Katilus, son of George and stepson of Chris of Lighthouse Road, will be transferring soon to a small boat station in Seattle, Wash. Safe journey.

Kristina Kestenbaum Leslie and her daughter Jennifer Williams Staples have been marketing new items they have created. They have reproduced old photographs taken by Richard Kestenbaum in the ‘40s and ‘50s and put them on cold cups, coffee mugs, tiles, and coasters for memory’s sake. There are many old photographs of Gay Head as well. Kristina and Jennifer will be selling at the Chilmark Flea Market on Wednesdays and Saturdays. In the meantime, they may be purchased at Wayward Wampum at the Cliffs as well.

Chris Lyons, his wife Kim, and their daughter Kay have arrived for their annual stay on Old South Road. Chris and I worked together decades ago for Ken Rose at Gay Head Sightseeing and we always enjoy reminiscing about those days and our fellow employees.

Thank you to Thomas Murphy, Esq., a Viet Nam Veteran, who never hesitated when I asked if he would consider being the Aquinnah veterans’ grave agent. Dukes County veterans agent Jo Ann Kinnecom Murphy asked if I knew anyone. Tom came to mind and he obliged so willingly.

Jennifer Williams Staples has arrived to spend the month with her mother Kristina Kestenbaum Leslie. Jennifer’s sons Max and Charlie have arrived following a visit with their maternal grandfather Sandy Williams in Virginia. They are all staying with Kristina and her grandson Darrius Lewis.

Happy 34th anniversary wishes to Jim Wallen and his bride Kathleen Smith on July 30.

Happy birthday wishes this week to Suzanne Boyer, Sarah Swift, Fran Bradley, and Nick Gonsalves on July 26. Greg Orcutt, Deborah Jernegan, and Captain Hollis Smith share the day on July 29. Jamie Sue Spears Vanderhoop parties on July 30 and shares the day with Polly Galbraith and Chris Laursen. July 31 is a day of celebration for Terry Pothier, Bernadette Crossland, and Dale Ferry. August 1 is a day of celebration for Donald G. Smith, Ryan Shea, Jason Boynton, Charity Randolph, and Barbara Magnuson Phillips. Retired US Navy Admiral Ron MacLaren will undoubtedly party on August 2. Aileen Mahoney will be 12 on August 2, sharing the day with Meadow Bassett. Tom Colligan and Nancy Gardella share the day on August 3. August 4 is a day of celebration for Tricia Bergeron, Jean Tatelbaum, and Marvin Popkin.
