Enjoying the weather a little better now that the humidity has ceased. Just a few more weeks of high summer and before we know it, autumn will arrive.

Happy 227th to the U.S. Coast Guard as Coast Guard Day is celebrated Friday. A group of special former Coast Guard men and women will observe the day in their honor at USCG Station Menemsha.

Aquinnah Public Library will have music on the deck at 5 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon with young musicians from Alex’s Place at the YMCA.

The Aquinnah Cultural Center is hosting a special guest speaker on Friday, August 4 at 5 p.m. Elizabeth Hoover, Manning Professor of American Studies at Brown University, will present Garden Warriors: Indigenous People and the Local Food Movement. Many indigenous people are looking to traditional foods and diets for medicinal and health reasons, as well as sustainable living. Please join in for this special presentation to learn all that is happening today in “Indian Country” with the local food movement. Donation at the door.

Reminder about the fundraiser for the benefit of Chilmark fire chief David Norton as he continues his medical care. Festivities will be held at the Portuguese American Club on August 5, doors open at 7 p.m. Admission $20. Silent auction, please bring a dessert or an appetizer. Join in the fun.

Wendy Weldon will her paintings at a reception on Friday, August 11 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Edgartown Public Library. Wendy’s beautiful work may be viewed Mondays through Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and on Fridays and Saturdays from 1 to 5.

On Monday evening, August 7, at 7 p.m., at the Federated Church Meetinghouse at 45 South Summer street in Edgartown, there will be a second presentation of For All the Saints, a historical pageant by local historian and dramatist E. St. John Villard. It presents the history of faith on the Island through the words and lives of Islanders from 1642 to 1945, with much of the period music sung by the Federated Church Choir, under the direction of Peter R. Boak, Minister of Music for the Federated Church. This is a free event. There will be a good will offering to support a local nonprofit organization.

For All The Saints is a compilation of an interesting assortment of Islanders from our past, including Thomas Mayhew Sr. and Jr., Peter Folger, members of the Vincent Family, Reverend Joseph Thaxter, Cornelius Marchant, Susan Colt Norton, Captain Francis Fisher, and Captain Robert Martin and his wife Sarah Brown Martin. Rev. David G. Berube will begin preaching for the Federated Church on Sunday, August 6. Earlier this year, he was selected by the search and call committee, and approved by the members of the church, to be the new settled minister. He has provided pastor coverage for the church in the past, when vacations, illness, or emergencies arose. He has also preached at a number of other Island churches in the past, including Community Baptist Church of Gay Head, over the past two decades. There will be two services, a short service with communion at 8 a.m. and a full service with music 9:30 a.m.

Laina Benoit and her parents Jim and Nancy have returned home after spending the week at the Great Wolf Inn celebrating friendship with her closest sisterhood buddies.

Henry and Betty Costabel have arrived at their summer home for a brief stay in order to accomplish a few repairs and other necessities. They are both looking very well.

More than 60 friends and neighbors enjoyed drinks and hors d’oeuvres at a gathering hosted by Maura FitzGerald, Allen Carney, Mitzi Pratt and Allen Rugg at the Carneys’ State Road home Sunday evening. The event was a “friend-raising” for the Island Grown Initiative, the Vineyard nonprofit dedicated to making good food available to all Island residents. Guests were serenaded by Isaac Taylor, whose wife, Noli, heads up Island Grown’s program for Vineyard schools, and enjoyed a brief talk by IGI’s director, Rebecca Haag. IGI’s new mobile food truck arrived in the midst of the festivities so guests could see the latest innovation. Guests were treated to a gorgeous sunset and entertainment by the Carneys’ two French Bulldogs, Milou and Jacky, who were fed their full quota of appetizers by guests when Maura and Allen weren’t looking.
