Summer is rapidly winding down. Still a few great beach days. Not many blueberries this year. The Rose of Sharon has had a banner year. The solar eclipse has come and gone. Labor Day is 10 days away.

At the Aquinnah Public Library, story time takes place at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 26th. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. is kids’ craft: cupcake liner turtles. On Tuesday, August 29 at 4 p.m. book group will discuss Imagine Me Gone by Adam Haslett. At 5 p.m. Tuesday Richard Johnson will speak about the tick population on the Island as part of the summer speaker series.

At the Aquinnah Cultural Center museum tours will take place Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. On Saturday, August 26 Nipmuc author and storyteller Larry Mann will speak and read from his books Tales From the Whispering Basket and The Mourning Road to Thanksgiving. After the reading Larry will be doing a book signing. This is an opportunity to purchase contemporary literature from a New England Native American author. And be sure to stop in and view the Our Story exhibit while it is at the cultural center. It will be travelling on after Sept. 16. The exhibit speaks of actual historical events of the 17th century that are little known.

Max and Cheryl Batzer watched the eclipse from a vantage point in South Carolina. For now they are back at their Lobsterville home.

Dr. John Duetsch and his wife, Joanne, were recent guests of his daughter Chris, her husband, George and their son George 4th as well as his granddaughter Lily Duetsch. Lily leaves this weekend for her freshman year at Rowan College in New Jersey after spending the summer working at Cliffhangers.

Bruce and Shelley Eckman have had their house full of grandchildren over the summer. It was nice to meet Nate and Max.

Roberta Gross will have an opening reception for the 10th annual abstract art exhibition, Abstract Spaces and Places, at the Louisa Gould Gallery in Vineyard Haven from 5 to 7 p.m. on August 26. The exhibit showcases the work of eight Vineyard artists. For more information, visit louisagould.com.

Devon Haskell, daughter of Mac and Trisha, has started her freshman year at Vanderbilt University. She was missed at Lobsterville over the summer.

Charlotte Meyer enjoyed a weekend visit from her son Dr. Fred Meyer who flew in from Minnesota. Rosa Meyer, daughter of Mark Meyer, spent the weekend with her grandmother as well and returned to Boston on Sunday afternoon. Rosa is a student at Northeastern and has been working at Massachusetts General Hospital for the summer.

Kathryn Myrtle returned to Providence on Saturday, celebrating her 19th birthday and to begin her sophomore year at Rhode Island College. Kathryn spent her summer with her aunt Jamie Sue Vanderhoop and her husband Durwood and their sons Sowonahsh, Kuhpay, and Mataquhas, while working at Cliffhangers.

Tiffany Smalley, daughter of Jay and Millicent, returned to California this week after a quick trip home and a visit with her siblings Zachary and Faith.
