Brrr . . . the temperatures have fallen from the 80s and high humidity down to the 40s at night and brisk winds. Most of the week it was in the 60s with rain. We will wait and see if Hurricane Irma pays a visit or not. The beach plums are ripe, right on schedule. Still waiting for the grapes to ripen. Beautiful hydrangeas have turned from purple to a deep burgundy. Beaches are still filled with swimmers and surfers. Chilmark Chocolates reopens this week.

Rumor has it former President Barack Obama, Michelle, Malia and Sasha will soon purchase property. The best part of the rumor is that said property may be in Aquinnah or Chilmark. They spent time in both towns during their August visit. Wherever it may be, they will be welcomed with open arms.

Thoughts of the new school year will be the talk this week at Aquinnah Public Library. On Saturday, Sept. 9 at 10:30 a.m. there will be story time and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. it will be a kid’s craft: making school bus picture frames. On Tuesday, Sept. 12 at 4 p.m. the after school club reconvenes.

On Friday, Sept. 8 Aquinnah Cultural Center museum tours will be from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Guest artist Ryan Derby of the Aquinnah Wampanoag tribe creates contemporary work in many media based on traditional themes. Ryan paints, carves, does leather work, bead work and much more. Visit and enjoy his beautiful work.

On Saturday, Sept. 9. the museum will be closed for the Aquinnah powwow, but visit the museum booth at the powwow on Saturday and Sunday.

Laina Benoit and her parents Jim and Nancy recently returned from a great trip to Bath, Me. Jim noted the water is much cooler than the Vineyard and not warm enough to swim in during late August. Laina is looking forward to sixth grade at the West Tisbury school and new friends after spending her first six years at Chilmark school.

Antonio Budim and Katarina Zlopasa will leave for a two-week vacation Saturday and then a trip to Boston before heading home to Croatia for their college studies. They both worked at Cliffhangers for the summer and Katarina also worked at the Chilmark Tavern.

Historian Jack Fruchtman will speak at the Chilmark library on Wednesday, Sept. 13 at 5 p.m. about Revolutionary War activist Thomas Paine and his book Common Sense. Mr. Fruchtman is a professor of political science and director of the Program in Law and American Civilization at Towson University.

Josie Iadicicco has returned to Manhattan for her junior year studies at New York University.

Paul Henry Jeffers-Mayhew has returned to Boston for his junior year studies at U Mass Boston. Paul Henry worked at his longtime position at Menemsha Galley and for his second year with the Edgartown Police Department.

My sincerest apologies to Noah Lipnick for misspelling his name in my column a week ago. His father, Jonathan Lipnick, kindly corrected me. In any event, Noah Lipnick is Charlie Shipway’s assistant in the Aquinnah sailing program and they have worked as a team to provide the greatest sailing skills to the young sailors on Menemsha Pond.

Over at USCG Station Menemsha, welcome to SN Dallas Ricker, who has just completed boot camp at Cape May, N.J. Dallas is originally from Harpswell, Me. and has moved to the Vineyard with his wife, Chelsi and their son, Parker. With their arrival, the number of children whose parents are serving at Station Menemsha has risen to 20 with number 21 due any time now.

Jesse Cisneros has transferred from Station Menemsha to A School in South Carolina for further studies to enhance his career.

Kudos to the crew who saved three people over the weekend when they were reported overdue from a fishing trip out of Menemsha. All is well that ends well. And have you noticed the coverage of thousands of lives saved during Hurricane Harvey in Texas — many heroes amongst us.

A few members of the Station Menemsha crew were able to meet former President Obama as he departed from the Vineyard two weeks ago.

Condolences to the family and friends of Dr. Leslie A. Hayling Sr., a family friend of more than half a century. Dr. Hayling, his wife, Adrienne, and their son Leslie Jr. were longtime residents of East Chop. They shared their homes with our family during the winter months and enjoyed their hospitality during the summers. Les will be missed by many in Oak Bluffs and Trenton.

Condolences to the family and friends of Kathryn O’Neil Bettencourt who died at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital on August 30. Her services were held Tuesday in Edgartown. Kathryn was a schoolmate at Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School.
