Get ready to swim, bike and run a very long way this Sunday, Sept. 10, beginning at 7 a.m. in the waters near Waban Park in Oak Bluffs. Yes, it is time again for the annual Vineyard triathalon? Hopefully a summer filled with cookouts and wine tastings won’t set you back.

But if you are truly worried about jumping into the fray, feel free to stand aside and let the real men and women take charge. And besides, watching can build up a big sweat. Or better yet, it could plant a small seed of admiration that will grow into roots of desire to participate in next year’s race.

Athletes will compete in two distances. The Vineyard Half features a 1.2 mile swim, a 56-mile bike ride, and 13.1 mile run. The spring option is a good option for all athletes, with a .33 mile swim, biking for 13 miles, and a 3.2-mile run.

The half distance begins at 7 a.m. and the sprint starts at 9 a.m. Most of the action is down Island, though the half marathon bike course wends all the way to Aquinnah and back to Oak Bluffs.

The triathalon is sponsored by Goodale Construction and benefits the YMCA of Martha's Vineyard.
