Gimme Shelter. I have a very ominous feeling about Hurricane Irma. Be kind to each other. I am worried about all the family and friends I have in Florida, and all the people there I do not know.

My sister in law, the other Nancy Gardella, lives in Fort Myers. She was with my nephew, Jonathan, last week to attend to her house in White Plains, N.Y. They flew back Tuesday morning to start his second week of school. He gets out at noon on Wednesday, and school is cancelled Thursday and Friday. She is renting a car and driving back to N.Y. Nancy reports it is impossible to get plane tickets out now. I am so worried about the roads being crowded and dangerous. My prayers are with my many cousins, friends, all of you in the area.

Considering last Sunday’s rain, moving the 11th annual auto show staged by the Tisbury Firefighters to Labor Day was a splendid idea. We are already looking forward to next year’s festival.

Another school year. Thank you to all who sent photos of their kids getting a fresh start. I have photos of brothers and sisters, singles, all ages and grades. The kindergarten and first grade novices really tug at my heart. And the last year of high school photos of kids I used to teach or babysit for especially brings tears to my eyes. A world of possibilities and problem solvers.

Speaking of photography, the Martha’s Vineyard Photography Club is open to all of all ages and skill levels. The club meets at 6:30 p.m. at our Vineyard Haven library the first Thursday of every month.

In other library news, remember to register ahead and save five dollars for the annual 5K Fun Run/ Walk to support the programs sponsored by the Friends of the Vineyard Haven Library on Sunday, Sept. 17. The Fun Run for the kids is free. I’ll see you there but I shall be working a water stop. Pretty sure my running days are over.

Any one may be a Friend of the Vineyard Haven library. Our meetings are the first Monday of each month at 1:30 p.m. My mother’s two favorite four letter words were book and read. I’ll see you there.

The final meeting of our Pushing the Limits Book Club will be at 3 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 11. The book for discussion is Land of the Painted Caves by Jean Auel. Pushing the Limits is a format that includes videos, discussion and interviews as well as just reading the material. This last meeting is just for the season. I am hoping we run the program next summer as well.

Art in the Stacks features abstract artist Margaret Emerson this month. Her nature-influenced abstracts are on display through September during regular library hours. Margaret has also exhibited at the Old Sculpin Gallery in Edgartown and at Uta Kloss’s Island Gallery in Vineyard Haven. Margaret Emerson is a retired nurse educator who moved to storybook Island in 2009. She is a member of the M.V. Art Association. If any artists are interested in showing at Art in the Stacks please call 508-696-4210. Angela Murphy, Colin Ruel, Daniel Van Landingham, take note! I know Renaissance woman Kathy Poehler has already exhibited there. If we are lucky she will again.

Get well wishes to Darcie Edness’s son now home from the hospital. Prayers and hugs.

Anniversary bouquets go out to the best neighbors anyone could ask for, Jim and Chichi Markey. They celebrate their 50th on Saturday, Sept. 9 with a jaunt to Manhattan.

Belated birthday balloons to Bob Pachico of Reliable Market who celebrated last week; Elizabeth Daly Budhal partied for hers on Sept. 6; Azarah Vaconcelos turned four on Sept. 5; and on Sept. 13 Naromar DePaula, Sr., takes the cake. Many happy returns.
