The 2017 Martha's Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby started on Sunday and all over the Island fisherman of all ages and sizes have been fishing from shore, boat and jetty. But on Sunday, Sept. 17, kids ages 4 to 14 have the opportunity to fish from the Oak Bluffs Ferry Wharf.

In the old days, the wharf was fair game for fishing, but those days are long gone, along with the coin divers bobbing in the current at the sides of the pier, knee-length tube socks and O.P. shorts.

But for one day only, kids get to relive the fun of reeling in a fish from up high; the only catch is everyone needs to get up early. The kids derby is from 6 to 8 a.m.

No registration is necessary. Just head to the Oak Bluffs Wharf with a rod. Bait will be waiting, along with lots of people to help out, and hopefully a big batch of hungry scup, plus a sea robin or two.
