Everyone is welcome to a celebration of the life of Annie Heywood on Saturday, Oct. 7 at 4 p.m. at the Chappy Community Center. Annie died peacefully on April 26 at the age of 75. Her full obituary appeared in the May 26 edition of the Gazette.

Slip Away farmstand will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays through Columbus Day weekend. They have wonderful fall crops of greens, carrots, onions, eggplant and garlic. In the freezer, you will find the finest sausage this side of Muskeget Channel.

Every week from now on I will be reminding you that starting on Sunday Oct. 15 there will be only one Chappy ferryboat in service. It will be the shorter of the two. So, expect to wait in line longer than before. Figure on it being at least twice as long. The On Time 3, which is the longer of the two ferries, has to go to Vineyard Haven to get hauled out of the water for Coast Guard inspection and maintenance. It will be there for at least 12 weeks. You can see the ferry lines through our web cameras by going to the Chappy Ferry website.

About a week ago I started hearing rumors that it is now occasionally possible to get around the corner at Wasque in an over-sand vehicle. Since I am a stickler for facts when it comes to the important things I interrogated three sources who all confirmed that this is true. Tony, Chris and Will all related that if all critical conditions are perfect, that beginning two hours before low tide until two hours after it is safe to drive over the sloping narrow strip of sand right at the very tip of Wasque Point. Thus, you can once again drive to and from town “by the beach.” But not all of the time. Call the beach access hotline at 508-627-8390 to hear the recording of Will Geresy reporting in great detail the way things are on the Chappy TTOR beaches.

This weekend I’m going to New Hampshire to attend a memorial service for Alex Bass who died July 10 at the age of 75. A memorial celebrating his life will be held at the Hilltop Golf Course, formally the Monadnock Country Club, 49 High street in Peterborough on Sunday, Oct. 1 from 3 to 5 p.m. All friends and family are welcome. Alex’s full obituary appeared in the July 21 issue of the Gazette.

Often the final sentence of an obituary notes that in lieu of flowers we consider a donation to their favorite nonprofit endeavor. Interestingly Alex chose the Atlantic Salmon Foundation, Saint Andrews, New Brunswick, Canada 513358. I love the photo of Alex that accompanies his obituary. He has on his dress Navy uniform. The lowest button is just slightly tight over his stomach. I marveled at this to his sister. She gave me the inside scoop on the complex alteration process required to get him into that jacket so many years after he first wore it.
