Well we had a taste of Jose late last week and into the weekend. Thousands of leaves and some limbs fell due to the rain and wind and all SSA boats were cancelled last Thursday. A smattering of pumpkins, mums and Halloween displays are beginning to appear around town as it is just 33 days away. Sunset is getting earlier by the day plus cooler temperatures and memories of September that seemed to have slipped by before you knew it. The leaves have begun to turn on some vines and a few trees but it will be until after Halloween that we will see some fine fall color. Roger Williams can be heard in a distance singing his classic Autumn Leaves. Jane Konicki reminds you it is National Coffee Day today.

The Living Local Harvest Festival and power show was well attended, as was the dinner that evening.

Congratulations to Leon and Brenda Brathwaite, of Vineyard Meadow Farms, who recently celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary off-Island with family and friends.

Lynne Demond, of Evansville, Ind., stopped by to visit on Monday. She was here for a few days with a friend showing him around the Island.

Olivia Larsen, over at the library, reports on a few of next week's events. Saturday at 3:30 p.m., they will host an architecture, poetry, and book talk in honor of the newly released book Living Where Land Meets Sea by John DaSilva and GennaRose Nethercott. On Wednesday at 5 p.m. playwright Wayne K. Greenwell will offer a reading and book signing in honor of Where I’m Crawling From, a newly-published collection of short stories.

On Oct. 12, 1949 Robin Elwell, of Arrowhead Farm in Indian Hill was elected president of the Agricultural Society at their annual meeting at the Agricultural Hall. Miss Polly Mayhew was elected secretary and William Pinney treasurer. Trustees elected were Albert O. Fisher Jr., Arnold M. Fisher, Jesse Steere and Theodore Meinelt. Mr. Meinelt was also appointed chairman of the 1950 fair. Mrs. Alice Mathewson read a report on the 1949 fair and a vote of thanks was given for her splendid work. It was also voted to mail out a questionnaire to the public seeking their opinion on how to improve future fairs.
