After months of air travel to far away places like New Zealand, Ireland, Madeira, France and Germany, Mike Broderick and Mary McConneloug wrapped up the final round of the 2017 Enduro World Series in Italy with Mike claiming a third overall for the season and Mary topped the podium with the Overall Masters Women Enduro MTB World Title. The remarkable duo pedaled themselves home to the sweet smell of fall in Chilmark where they can reconnect with friends and family.

Irene Ziebarth and Doug West are closing the door on their seasonal gingerbread cottage in Oak Bluffs and opening a new door and new chapter in life on Tennis Lane. After 33 years of visiting together (although Doug has been visiting summers since he was seven) they’ve opted to make Chilmark home. Welcome, neighbors.

If you are a typical human being, then you likely get hunger pains right around that noontime hour. Have no fear, starting on Nov. 6, The Food Truck will be staged in the Home Port parking lot from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday. Available to you will be the standard favorites like the rosemary fries, TFT burger, breakfast burrito and various soups along with a rotating menu of specials. You can call ahead with your order to 508-560-5883.

Oh, I cannot forget to mention you’ll be able to find The Food Truck at the winter farmers’ market at the Ag Hall from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday this fall except Thanksgiving weekend, through Dec. 16. You’ll also find Beetlebung Farm, The Grey Barn and Farm and Kitchen Porch Catering at the winter market, to name a few more.

At the Chilmark Library, the month of November is all about local food and the people who supply it. The series starts on Nov. 1 at 5 p.m. with a talk from Linsey Lee entitled Tales from Island Farms, Fishermen and Farmers, highlighting local farmers and fishermen in oral history and video interviews that she has collected over the years.

Barrett Oliver, Ingrid Moore, Matt Karlinsky, Tegan Fenner, Tyler Shipway, Silas Abrams, Atlas Zack, Adam Miller and Graham Stearns, the Chilmark eighth graders at the West Tisbury School, have had an eventful week of beach walks, fishing, pig roasts, basketball and pizza parties with their UK exchange students in town. It seems like just yesterday we had Luke Jenkins visiting with us from the town of Warrington but, I guess, it really was a whole year ago.

The Chilmark Firefighter’s Association will host its annual, for the last half century or so, Halloween get together for all Chilmark kids, newborn through fifth grade at the CCC on Tuesday, Oct. 31 from 5 to 5:45 p.m. This is the perfect starting point for an evening of frolic where you’re little ones will find pizza, cider and a costume parade before our young ghouls and goblins head out on the town in search of sweet treats. Families should consider bringing a snack or a sweet to share.

The library is open until 5 p.m. on Halloween. Alexandra Pratt will coordinate games, songs, crafts and fun from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Kids can trick or treat at the circulation desk, so be sure to have those costumes ready.

One more Halloween mention: Are you interested in having trick-or-treaters knock on your door? Please let me know. I’ve got a running list going of those who will welcome our candy seekers.

The Wild Food Challenge was a draw for a few Chilmark folks this past weekend. The Athearn family, Meg, Dan, Clara, Zeb and Penny, spent the better part of the day at the Farm Institute prepping their dishes and visiting with fellow foragers. Penny made autumn olive fruit leather. Zeb made bonito and venison surf ‘n turf with sunchokes. Clara made wild grape braised goose thighs with foraged veggies. Mama Meg prepared honeyed lavender ice cream with beach plum, or as she calls it, goo. Daddy Dan shared a smoked charcuterie board with pickled wild veggies and preserves. Although the entire clan gets a solid A for effort, this year, both Zeb and Penny rolled home with a couple of wins. Also leading the pack was my niece, Emme Carroll, with boxberry ice cream.

The dredge crew is wrapping things up. Keith, Josh, Jordy, Marty, Rocky, Uncle Bill, Paul and the gang made short work of cutting an eight-foot deep 80-foot wide channel into Menemsha Pond over the course of a mere 19 days. The group has been nothing but professional, organized, meticulous and friendly. They’ve become part of our community in the short time they have been here and, gosh, you could set your clock to their shift changes.

Miss Jane and Harriet Poole Otteson are back from their trip to the Azores. Stay tuned for some highlights.
