Soon we will be recovering from Thanksgiving dinner. Friday is the traditional start of the Christmas season.

Old friend Jane Konicki up in Webster reports that she has purchased all her gifts and will avoid Black Friday. She will have her husband Ed put up her tree before their turkey dinner. Our friend and summer resident Judy Hall out in Oklahoma City will have her husband Malcolm put up their tree on Dec. 1, a family tradition. They will entertain many for Thanksgiving dinner. She reports there are great bargains and sales at Shepplers and she persuaded him to take her out to lunch at the Cattleman’s Café on Monday.

It seems that this month has slipped away in a blink of the eye. When traveling the roads these days, especially at night, be extra careful as you are apt to see more deer than cars. The shotgun season for deer starts on Monday and will last for two weeks, so wear brightly colored clothing if you walk in or near the woods.

Sig Van Raan and his wife Susan Dickler recently returned from a three-week trip to Spain and Morocco. In Spain they visited old friends on the island of Menorca. From there they flew to Casablanca and took the train to Fez, and from there the train to Marrekesh. They wound up in a small French family resort at the edge of the Atlas Mountains. Their stay was highlighted by a trip to an ancient village high up in the mountains where they visited a women’s weaving collective and bought a beautiful hand woven Berber rug.

Tony and Doreen Rezendes of Edgartown Road will entertain 29 people for Thanksgiving dinner all family from near and far. They have so many people they decided to hold the family get together at their Square Rigger Restaurant in Edgartown.

Richard Knabel of Panhandle Road will entertain a gathering of friends and neighbors for Thanksgiving dinner at his home.

Brandon Stekle and Danielle Crum of Hartville, Ohio were married last Saturday afternoon. It was their first ever trip to the Island. Congratulations.

Linda Alley reports that a group of Vineyard artisans will be having their shop for the third year at Alley’s Farm Stand. They will be open starting Friday through Christmas Eve, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The Creative Living Award has been presented this year to old friends Heidi, Peter and Frank Dunkl of Chilmark. A reception honoring them will be held on Tuesday at 5 p.m. at the Portuguese American Club in Oak Bluffs.

The church will open its doors once again to welcome holiday shoppers to the annual Christmas Faire on Dec. 2 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Handmade wreaths and arrangements will be available for sale along with vintage jewelry. Lunch will be available between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. in the parish hall.

Also, in response to the town not holding its annual holiday party this year, Phyllis Meras has decided to step in and organize a holiday party on Dec. 14 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Agricultural Hall. The party is a potluck with contributions welcome. For more information call Phyllis at 508-693-1439.

Olivia Larsen, over at the library, reports that they will have a number of events starting Saturday. On Monday at 7 p.m. join them for a screening of the documentary Brave New World How Silicon Valley is Shaping our Future followed by questions and answers with the film’s director Angela Anderson.
