Beautiful sunny days abound with temperatures averaging in the 40s. The landscape is dotted with bright red winter berries, holly, and burning bush. These early sunset days will soon be over for the season.

The Aquinnah Public Library is preparing for winter. The after school program will meet on Tuesday afternoon. Story time on Thursday and on Saturday morning as usual. Thursday is dinner and a movie: The Emoji Movie. There will be pizza and veggies.

The deer weigh in station is still at the tribal administration building as always. As of Wednesday morning, Aquinnah Ranger Michael Sellitti informed me that only 20 deer had been weighed in thus far, the largest weighing 125 pounds. Please remember to wear bright orange in your travels, especially on walks. Shotgun season runs through Dec. 9 and then it is primitive firearm season from Dec. 11 through Dec. 30.

Aquinnah Cultural Center is hosting a “Fun Raiser” on Saturday, Dec. 9, at 4 p.m..Tickets are $20. Price includes a traditional dinner by Kristina Hook. There will be Wampanoag artists selling gifts (just in time for the holidays!), and music by Black Brook Drummers as well as flute music.

It was nice to see Al Alley 3rd on Monday. He had spent his Thanksgiving with his father, Forrest Alley, in Aquinnah as well as with his mother Emily Packish Frank in Tisbury.

Welcome to Samuel Hart and his wife Laura who have moved into their new home on Lighthouse Road. Their Thanksgiving guests included his brother Max Hart and his wife Melissa and their children Hazel and Beatrix. They were joined by their cousin Toby Bull, his wife Yanna, and their children Ariella and Avlette.

Congratulations to Coletrane Leport, son of Darren and Nancy, who was inducted into the National Honors Society this week. Cole is a senior at Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School. He has spent the past few summers working at Menemsha Texaco.

Karen MacPhail spent her Thanksgiving in the neighborhood with her son Shaun MacPhail, his wife Alexandra Taylor and their daughters Olive and Violet.

Noah Manning returned home on Sunday afternoon after spending five days in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. with his grandparents Bill and Joan Kistner. He was accompanied by his parents Paul and Theresa. Dana, Kayla and Kylee Darcy joined all for Thanksgiving, as guests of Michael and Margaret Kistner and their extended family.

Sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Nancy Beth Caldwell who passed away on Nov. 23 with her beloved husband Duncan by her side. She would have been 66 years old on Dec. 2. Nancy and Duncan have been long time Aquinnah summer residents, having spent their winters in Paris where they shared their knowledge of France with all who ventured over to visit them. Duncan and Nancy traveled the world. She was a member of Friends of the Aquinnah Public Library where she would often present her knowledge of multiculturalism as a part of the summer speaker series. She was a fascinating speaker. Nancy is survived by her husband Duncan and their children Olivia and Sebastian, as well as friends around the world.

Sincerest condolences to the family and friends of John Lovewell, father of Mark Lovewell and his siblings.

Condolences to Craig Spa Tharpe, his daughter Linnea, and grand-daughter Aquinnah and their extended family whose mother, grandmother, and great grandmother Judy Denise Huggins passed away in Trinidad. Judy was born in British Guyana in 1939. She loved her Vineyard visits. Spa joined his family in Trinidad for her services on Nov. 24, and is now back at his home in Aquinnah.

Across the channel at USCG Station Menemsha, Thanksgiving dinner was shared by Joseph Belladue, Jason Breau, Joshua Brooks, David Galan, Daniel Gonzalez and his wife Margarita and their children Abdiel and Alaynna, Samuel Hoppe, Leanna McKenna, Dallas Ricker and his wife Chelsi and their son Parker, Colby Storm, Adam Struyk and his wife Beth and their son Landon, and yours truly. A grand time was had by all.

Congratulations to BM3 Joseph Belladue on completing his coxswain checkride and achieving his certification. Joe is originally from North Plymouth.

Many of you will remember YN3 Lindsay Edwards Gonsalves who served at Station Menemsha until about three years ago before transferring to Virginia and more recently to South Carolina. Three weeks ago she traveled to Bahrain for a one year deployment. We will expect Lindsay will return to the Vineyard often, as she is married to Jordan Gonsalves.

Joseph Canha celebrated his birthday on Nov. 30. Very special Happy Birthday wishes to my friend Patricia Pease who celebrates a milestone on Dec. 2. Fellow Vineyard Gazette columnist John S. Alley will party on Dec. 3.
