The Vineyard Gazette Not a Holiday Party was held this year at Isola on Friday evening. Jane Slater was recognized for her many years as the Chilmark columnist upon her retirement over this past year. New columnists were welcomed: Katie Tamoshunas Carroll for Chilmark and Richard Lewis Taylor for Oak Bluffs. We always have a grand time catching up with each other, especially being the columnists and rarely in the press room.

Chester Cook returned to his home in Bellingham, Wash. this week after being here for the services for his nephew Jake Baird.

Albert O. Fischer will at last have a show of his photography at the Martha’s Vineyard Savings Bank Chilmark branch from Feb. 2 through Feb. 28. An opening reception will be on Feb. 2 from 5 to 6 p.m.

Condolences to the family and friends of Ben Hubert who passed away on Jan. 4 in New York. Ben and his family have been a part of the summer community his entire life, and neighbors of our family. His parents James and Mary Hubert first came to what was once Gay Head in 1914 when James taught at the Gay Head School and preached at the Gay Head Church as well. During the summer months they operated Camp Aquinnah. Ben was very generous with his friends and neighbors in allowing the use of his tennis courts which were well used even during the summer of 2017. Ben is survived by his beloved wife, Lucile, as well as his nephew Judge James Hubert and his nieces Jamie Hubert and Sheryl Scott and their families.

Molly Purves will perform in Shakespeare for the Masses: Measure for Measure at the Vineyard Playhouse on Saturday at 7 p.m. and on Sunday at 1 p.m. The performances are free.

Congratulations to Pearl Vercruysse, daughter of James and Layne, who is on the dean’s list at Emmanuel College.
