We are heading into a long weekend as Monday is President’s Day so the schools, post office and all town buildings will be closed. School vacation week here starts Friday, Feb. 23 this year and many of you will be taking a winter break off-Island.

Last Sunday we received at least three inches of rain. It thundered and there was lightening flashes and strong winds toward evening. Old timers would call it a real soaker.

Celine Segel is the newest U.S. citizen in town. She attended a swearing in ceremony last week in Boston with her husband Jay. She plans to register to vote and attend the annual town meeting in April.

Anna Alley traveled to East Taunton to celebrate the birthday of our grandson Henry Hambardzumian. They all went up to New Hampshire for the day on Sunday. Anna returned home Tuesday evening.

Larry Schubert and his wife Judy Drew went to Sunday River in Maine last week to ski. Joining them were Peter Rodegast and Nancy Cole and Lyn and Jill Bouck. Larry reports that despite the fact that it snowed every day they all had a wonderful time.

Olivia Larsen reports that on Tuesday from 12 to 1:30 p.m. the library will offer a free drop-in wellness clinic with the VNA of Cape Cod. Get your blood pressure checked and answers to medical questions.

Ed Konicki was browsing in an antique store in Dudley last week, and found in an old book a July 1935 boat schedule of the old Steamship Line that the owner used as a bookmark and was about to throw away. In the summer season, 83 years ago, a total of 14 round trips were offered daily, with just six on Sunday, by three steamers, the Naushon, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket. They served several ports in those days: Vineyard Haven, Oak Bluffs, Edgartown, Woods Hole and New Bedford. Connecting motor coach service was offered between Oak Bluffs, Vineyard Haven and Edgartown. It also included a New York boat schedule that served New Bedford, Fall River, Boston, Providence and Newport, R.I.

Happy birthday to Dan Goldrup, Don Mac Donald, Sandra Wilson, Kathy Kaempfert and Nicole Mone today; Henry Hambardzumian, Lesley Eaton, Brian Estes and Barbara Paciello tomorrow; Marilyn Bergeron, Bob and Susan Wasserman and Patricia Duffy on Sunday; Bob Knight, Cristina Wiley and David Schweizer on Monday; Lila Fischer and May Baldwin on Wednesday; David Bowman, Samantha Church and Justin Dodge on Thursday. Belated Birthday wishes to Lisa Lillabridge and Alan Gowell.
