It is known as the quietest week of the year on the Island, the winter school break, when families flee the Island, and so many stores and restaurants also disappear behind darkened doorways and closed signs swinging in the February wind.

But fear not, those who remain. The Island has your back, with activities and day camps ranging from animal tracking to movies and crafts. Check out the libraries for vacation activities every day, or for outdoor play visit the day camps at Felix Neck and hike with the Trustees on their February Vacation Exploration. The Martha’s Vineyard Horse Community Horse Center also has a winter break schedule for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Island Grown Schools is stepping in to help kids who might need a free lunch or just want some company. The program is an extension of the free summer lunch program, now extending for the first time to the school break, funded by an anonymous donor.

Lunch will be served from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. from Feb. 26 to March 2. The Vineyard Haven Library hosts on Monday, the West Tisbury Library on Tuesday and Thursday and the Oak Bluffs Library on Wednesday and Friday. The West Tisbury Library will also host their own free lunch program on off-days.

Lunches will consist of soup, bread, apple cider and dessert prepared by Island chefs Gabrielle Chronister and Jean Cleary. Isola in Edgartown is donating their kitchen space for the effort.

“It will be a communal meal,” said Noli Taylor, IGI food education director. “We hope that people who come will strike up conversation.”
