February was the eighth warmest since record keeping began in 1882. And it was the third wettest month on record. Spring is just over two weeks away and we turn clocks ahead on March 11. Daffodils have sprouted in many areas, another sure sign of spring.
Phyllis Meras held a birthday party for Tom Thatcher on Saturday night at her home. Several people attended and had a wonderful evening.
Sam Alley returned home last Saturday after a week off-Island visiting friends and his sister Nicole and family.
Susan Block reports that Frank Adam’s flower garden on Music street is getting close to blooming. Anna Alley has spotted many robins flying about our back yard.
Tara Whiting, town clerk, reports that the ballot is closed for the annual town elections. The last day to register to vote before the annual town meeting is March 21.
Olivia Larsen over at the library, reports on some of the activities in the coming days. Friday at 1 p.m. the library and MV Film Society will host an interactive screening of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone at the Film Center. Doors will open at 12:30 p.m. There will be interactive script, goodie bags and a sorting hat. Come in costume! Reserve your free ticket at mvfilmsociety.com. Saturday from 4 to 5 p.m., the library will host an art reception featuring the work of Tom Mullins. Refreshments will be served. Tom’s exhibit Introspection will be on display throughout the month of March.
History note: Eighty-five years ago next Monday evening Vineyarders gathered around their radios to listen to President Franklin D. Roosevelt hold the first of his radio-broadcast fireside chats. FDR used the informal radio addresses to explain his policies to the American public. In an era before television FDR used the most immediate and intimate means of communicating with the public available at the time: the radio.
