Well we got slammed by another northeast storm on Tuesday. This time we had nine inches of heavy wet snow, howling winds with gusts to 65 mph. Power outages, schools closed, all boats cancelled and trees down most everywhere. North Road and the lower end of Tiahs cove were particularly hard hit. And now we have another storm predicted.
Anna Alley, of State Road, returned home on Tuesday after a long weekend visiting our grandchildren and their parents in East Taunton.
Sig Van Raan reports that he and his wife Susan spent last week work-shopping his play with cast and staff from MV Playhouse. At a reading last Saturday with a well versed audience of 50, the play was very well received. He recently heard from my producer in Havana that the play which had a limited weekend production back in February will have a one month run in April at Theatre Alfredo Lauredo in Havana. He is planning to go back down to Cuba in late April.
Jay Segel, Sue and Sally Crawford and Lori Yarrow teamed up to write an article, Short Limb, which is in the current issue of Lower Extremity Review.
Old friend Billy Merry passed away in Boston last weekend. He was a part of Lambert’s Cove for many years and built many a rock walls in town and around the Island. Our condolences to his family.
Marian Irving reports that the holiest week in the Christian calendar begins with the Palm Sunday service this Sunday at 10 a.m. in the church and the Tenebrae Service and Communion Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
Tara Whiting, town clerk, would like to remind voters that the town meeting is April 10 at 7 p.m. in the school gym. The town election is April 12, the polling hours are 7 a.m. till 8 p.m. at the Public Safety Building. Absentee ballots are available for those that are away that day and/or cannot make it to the polls. If you have any questions call her at 508-696-0148. Voters will be facing a 56 article warrant. There will be no contested offices on the election ballot, and just one question seeking $400,000 to fund the annual operating budget.
She also reports on some highlights of the warrant: money to buy a new police cruiser and a vehicle for the fire chief, a series of articles spending funds from Community Preservation money, personnel and zoning articles, some not recommended by the finance committee. A petition article seeking money to operate the communication center and a stabilization fund for the high school also are not recommended by the finance committee.
Thanks to the school principal and the West Tisbury Library Foundation, childcare will be provided at the school on April 10 from 6:45 to 9 p.m., and will be offered again on April 11 if town meeting continues to a second night. Kids of all ages are welcome. Registration is required. Please contact the Library no later than April 1 to register at 508-693-3366.
Olivia Larsen, over at the library, reports that on Tuesday, the library will be closed until noon for staff training. On Thursday at 5 p.m., the MV Chamber Music Society presents a concert with musicians of the Quartet San Francisco.

History note: on March 24, 1945, Mr. and Mrs. Horace Athearn, of Crow Hollow, received word from their youngest son, Cpl. Clifton H. Athearn, telling them of his safe arrival in France. They had two other sons in the service, Lieut. Elmer W. Athearn of the Engineers’ aviation battalion was stationed somewhere in the South Pacific and Sgt. Leonard B. Athearn of the Air Transport Command was stationed in India.
