So much for spring in Aquinnah. On Wednesday morning the temperature was 21 degrees with a frost covering. The daffodils are in full bloom this week and forsythia is blooming as well. Songbirds are still singing as well as the nightly chorus of pinkletinks. Porto Pizza has reopened for the season. And Martha’s Vineyard Bakery/Back Door Donuts opened Thursday.

At the library this week, a special story time will be held on Saturday, April 14 at 10:30 a.m. with guests from the Family Services Program of Martha’s Vineyard Community Services. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. there will be kids crafts (mini kites). Tuesday marks the beginning of school vacation week and the library and they will have extra crafts all week. Barbara Lampson is substituting for Vera DellaRusso at the library for the month of April. Jennifer Burkin, librarian and artist, will lead her popular acrylic landscape painting workshop on Saturday, April 21 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at the town hall. This has traditionally been a well-attended program; call the library to sign up at 508-645-2314.

April is sexual assault awareness month. CONNECT to End Violence will host the sixth annual walk to raise awareness about this important topic on Saturday, April 21. Pre-registration is $10. The Islanders Talk benevolent fund kale soup contest is Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Portuguese American Club. Tickets are $10 at the door, $5 for children.

A memorial service for Ralph R. Devine Jr. will be held on Sunday, April 15 at 2 p.m. at the Portuguese American Club on Vineyard Avenue in Oak Bluffs. Ralph died unexpectedly on Feb. 17 in Colorado. Many of us enjoyed seeing him on his trip home in October when he joined us for a tribal elders luncheon.

Sincere condolences to the family and friends of Phillips (Flip) Harrington who died this week. It was always a pleasure to sit down and have a conversation with Flip. Often he told tales of his worldwide adventures, but we most enjoyed reminiscing about the old days in Menemsha when he went swordfishing in the 1960s or about our friends in Middletown and Newport. He could have filled volumes with his adventures.
