The weekend weather was reasonable if not warm and toasty. April 15 was the coldest it has been on that date, 40 degrees, since 1881. Not a very warm start to spring. Despite the miserable weather the daffodils are in full bloom in every back yard.

Anna Alley returned home on Tuesday after a trip up to Taunton to visit and care for twins Eddie and Mark. Their mother Nicole returned home from a trip to Florida with the older boys Robbie and Henry.

Tanya over at the Up-Island Council on Aging reports that there is still time to join them on May 30 for a fabulous meal at S&S Restaurant then a visit to the Harvard Museum of Natural History and the Peabody Museum of Archeology and Ethnology via private round-trip motor coach. Please call 508-693-2896 to reserve a spot, preferably by 4/27.

At the library, on Saturday at 3 p.m. Cape Light Compact will give a presentation titled Renewable Energy 101. Find out how renewable energy works and how to support it, and learn about solar basics. The event is co-sponsored by the library and the Green Team of the First Congregational Church.

On Sunday at 1 p.m. herbalist Jennie Isbell Shinn and personal trainer Melissa Clay will lead a third workshop in their DIY Wellness Series. Learn about tips and tricks to get seven to eight hours of sleep each night. At 3:30 p.m. all are invited to the biannual community poetry reading hosted by West Tisbury’s new poet laureate, Spencer Thurlow. This event features community members reading their own poems and/or the poems of others. Help keep the tradition alive by attending as a reader or a listener or both.

On Tuesday the library will be closed until 1 p.m. for staff training.

History note: On April 24, 1973, Pat Jenkinson, co-owner of Up-Island Automotive, received severe burns to his body when sparks from a welding torch ignited a can of cleaning fluid which then exploded while he was at work in the garage. Police chief George Manter transported him to the hospital and Pat was immediately transferred to Massachusetts General Hospital for further treatment. It was learned in a day or so that Pat would need blood transfusions and the town fire department helped arrange a special visit from the Red Cross Bloodmobile.
