In a whirlwind trip to Martha’s Vineyard Thursday, Lieut. Gov. Karyn Polito signed community compacts with four Island towns.

The compacts were signed with Edgartown, Oak Bluffs, Chilmark, and Tisbury. They commit the towns to best practices in local government and are expected to open up state grant money to improve government functions, especially regional services.

“If we can strengthen local government and give them more tools and resources, then we can deliver better services and make it a stronger and better community,” the lieutenant governor said.

She ended her day in Vineyard Haven, where she signed a compact with the Tisbury selectmen that aims to help the town regionalize services and amend its bylaws to develop workforce housing.

Also attending the Tisbury signing were officials from Edgartown, who signed a compact to develop more regional services.

Earlier Ms. Polito visited Chilmark, where the selectmen signed a compact that aims to help the town regionalize transportation planning services.

In Oak Bluffs town leaders signed a compact that agreed to establish a unified budget document and work on regionalization of services.

Ms. Polito said more than 330 Massachusetts cities and towns have now signed community compacts to improve local government.
