Prepare yourself for The Tony Show on Sunday, May 6 from noon to 4 p.m. The Tony Show is a day of celebration for the life of Tony Lombardi, the former director of Alex’s Place who died on Dec. 13 after suffering an ischemic stroke.

Mr. Lombardi was a beloved figure on the Island and at the YMCA, where he shepherded teenagers, helping to guide them past the difficult challenges life provides. He was a man who embodied the oft-heard phrase of walking the walk and talking the talk. A former heroin addict, Mr. Lombardi co-founded the Safe Haven summer camp for inner-city children living with HIV, which he ran from its inception in 1994 until 2009. He taught math and other subjects in the special education department at the regional high school, managed the Wintertide Coffee House in the 1980s and 1990s and then turned Alex’s Place into a year-round destination for teens.

The man was everywhere and left a long legacy. But he didn’t like balloons or glitter so leave them at home on Sunday.

Mr. Lombardi said he didn’t want a wake or funeral service. Rather, he wanted a party, with music, food and stories. So bring them all, with pictures too. There will be a mic set up for anyone who wants to tell their story in song.

Alex’s Place is located in the YMCA, at 111 Edgartown Road in Oak Bluffs.
