Aquinnah has been a little fog bound over the week but at times it is great to see the sunshine. The Outermost Inn will open on May 18 as will the Chilmark Tavern. Chilmark Chocolates reopened on May 10.

Congratulations to Marissa D’Antonio, granddaughter of Sarah Saltonstall, who achieved high honor roll status as a senior at Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School. Marissa received a MVYouth Scholarship Award and will attend Boston College in the fall.

Congratulations to Coltrane Leport, son of Darren and Nancy Leport and grandson of Beverly Guanco Wright and her husband Robert MacDiarmid and grandson of Charles Leport and Virginia Deeds, upon receiving a MVYouth Scholarship. Cole will attend Hobart and William Smith College in September, his first choice. For the summer, we will once again find him at Menemsha Texaco.

Congratulations also to Menasha Leport in achieving her high honor status at Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School for this past quarter.

Congratulations and all the best to Margaret Gonsalves Oliveira who retired this week after 32.5 years of reading meters for Commonwealth Electric and then EverSource. Margaret and her family spent their younger years at their home on Lobsterville Beach.

Congratulations to Ruby Suman, daughter of Barnaby and Sibel Suman, for her place on the high honor roll at Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School where she is a member of the sophomore class.

Actually, I have been out of town for a few days at the Massachusetts General Hospital under the care of Dr. Timothy E. Guiney and Dr. Min Young Kwon. I am on the mend presently at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital where I am cared for by my nurses Linda Fischer, Scott, Nicole who resides less than half a mile down the road from me, and Lisa Johnson who is originally from Saint Catherine’s, Jamaica. Lisa has been working very hard and is presently looking for an affordable home or apartment to rent.

Happy 172nd Birthday to the Vineyard Gazette for covering the news across the Island for all those years. I am only on my 25th year of writing for the Gazette and I certainly enjoy the ability to view many old articles in the archives at the office and on microfilm at a few of the libraries.
