Could it be? Does it smell like Spring? All two days of it? Just in time to observe Mother’s Day and welcome it in with a new art show at Featherstone. Join Kathy Poehler and the crew of great artists on Sunday afternoon for the opening reception. The show runs through May 31.

As far as art openings go, Jack Ryan’s beloved New York city was well-represented last Saturday at the Vineyard Playhouse. It runs through the end of the month. It was my first meeting with the man himself, and his lovely wife, Lauren. I hear she is quite an artist herself. So much fun to see familiar faces and meet new art devotees. Jenny Allen was there, Corinne Dorsey, Karen Mercier, MJ Bruder Munafo, Paul Munafo, Paul F. Doherty, and other appreciators. We must do this more often.

No one knows how Marion Cardova found about her surprise party. But she did. Marion is trying to peek at the guest list. You are all invited to her Not Such A Surprise party on Saturday, May 12 at the BTW. Party begins at 4 p.m. Dolores Borza is looking for help with decorations at 2 p.m. Rita Brown is making a cake. You are welcome to bring a side dish or dessert. Marion will be 97. This will be a blast.

I must pause here to acknowledge National Nurses week. How many of us, how often, have been touched by an angel. On behalf of all of us and our family members, thank you very much.

Saturday May 19 is a busy day on Island. Our Martha’s Vineyard Community Services campus will hold its semi-annual electronics disposal collection. The hazardous materials collection will be held at the Edgartown Refuse district that morning from 9 a.m. till noon. Sounds like our trunks and trucks will be bursting at the seams. I’ll see you there.

Our school prom committee and Your Taxi has come together to offer all prom-goers free rides, wherever needed, all night long on Saturday, May 19. I am sure all young prom-goers and parents and guardians feel much relieved! Have a great time.

Nancy Aronie is offering one of her fabulous workshops in Writing from the Heart. Jumpstart your memoir. Come write in Chilmark from May 27 through May 31. Laugh, cry, write with her. Broke? Make her an offer. She won’t refuse. Visit chilmarkwritingworkshop.com. You will be very pleased.

Congratulations to Margaret Oliveira. Margaret is no longer our lovely meter maid. Margaret put in 32.5 years with the electric company. Now she’s free to ride horses, see friends, and enjoy the Island.

Get well wishes go out to my colleague, Aquinnah columnist, June Manning.

The birthday bandwagon pulls along Maryanne D’Alessandro on May 11. And on May 12 Jyl Manning takes the cake. Many happy returns.
