State police are investigating an accident in Edgartown in which three cyclists resting on the wooden rail beside a bike path were hit by a passing vehicle, according to police on the scene.

The incident took place on Beach Road between the Triangle and Bend in the Road Beach at about 2:30 p.m. Monday afternoon.

The three cyclists were all transported by ambulance to the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. The extent of their injuries is unknown, but officials said their injuries were not thought to be life threatening.

Police say preliminary reports from witnesses indicate the vehicle, a gray Jeep SUV, was traveling on Beach Road toward Edgartown when it sideswiped the three people sitting on the low wooden barrier railing. The driver turned around and returned to the accident site.

Edgartown police and fire and Oak Bluffs medics also responded to the scene.

The roadway was reduced to one lane for about a half hour Monday afternoon during the incident response.
