I expect to see every English major, reader of books and lover of literature at the Katharine Cornell Theatre on Saturday night. The annual performance of Arts and Society will begin at 8 p.m. John Crelan’s loving tribute to James Joyce on Bloomsday, June 16 will be unforgettable. Phil Dietrich is on board and Gerry Yukevich, Molly Conole and other devotees of the written and spoken word will delight you with this great Irish author. We are so blessed to have this crew doing what they do best. Tickets are at Bunch of Grapes or at the door. A nice cultural kick-off to summer.

Graduation was beautiful and poignant and took up the entire Tabernacle and all of Oak Bluffs last Sunday. Colleges, gap years, work — we wish you all the best and the brightest.

If you can volunteer to bring a dish or help with the annual observation of Juneteenth, an annual celebration of freedom, call or leave word with Colleen at 508-693-3605. She is also accepting raffle items. Carrie Tankard is another contact at 508-683-2797. The party is from noon to 1 p.m. at the Oak Bluffs Council on Aging just after the 11 a.m. meeting of the NAACP of Martha’s Vineyard on June 16. New faces are always welcome.

Amor Towles is getting great reviews on his book A Gentleman from Moscow. I suspect he found his love of literature through his mom, Holly Towles. Holly has spent years recommending the best books for my mother and me to read. As a matter of fact, today is Holly’s birthday. Next week is her husband, Khalil’s birthday. The two will begin by celebrating tonight with dinner at the Lamberts Cove Inn. They are looking forward to seeing how the new management is doing. I’ll get their report next week.

I made quite a spelling faux pas last week reporting on my young friend’s sixth birthday. His name is actually Brycen. Ignore my creative spelling but do celebrate this delightful boy.

Our library and its group, the Friends of, bring many special groups to us. The big elephant in the room is Lyme disease and ticks on the Island. Be in the program room at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 19 to learn more about this malady. So many of our friends and neighbors are suffering with this.

On June 11, 41 years ago Chris and Carol Kennedy tied a knot that remains unbroken. They fell in love and stayed there. Anniversary bouquets go out to them.

May I be condemned to a stalled truck in the middle of Five Corners on Labor Day weekend for neglecting to inform you of Tamma Cimeno’s birthday May 31.

Meanwhile, the birthday bandwagon pulled along with Ivy Medina on June 9; Denise Dupre celebrated on June 11; Holly Towles was fêted on June 13; and on June 20, Khalil Khalil takes the cake. Many happy returns.
