A juvenile driver was injured and later issued a citation following a car accident that involved three vehicles on Barnes Road on the afternoon of June 15.

Edgartown police did not release the name of the juvenile driver, but cited her for negligent operation of a motor vehicle and summoned her to appear in court.

According to the Edgartown police report, the incident occurred at about 2 p.m. that Friday. A Napa Auto Parts delivery van driven by Patrick McHugh of Oak Bluffs, was slowing down to make a turn from Barnes Road onto North Line Road at the entrance to the airport business park. A 2003 black Honda driven by the juvenile driver hit the delivery van from behind, causing the delivery van to flip over on its roof, according to the police report. The Honda sustained severe damage to the vehicle’s front end.

The delivery van slid forward and damaged a gray Jeep SUV waiting to exit North Line Road.

When police arrived, they found the juvenile driver sitting by the side of the road, shaken, and unable to speak, the report said. She was transported to the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital by ambulance.

Mr. McHugh told police he was able to crawl out the window of his upside-down van. He also was shaken and transported to the hospital for evaluation.

The driver of the third vehicle was uninjured.
