A three-car accident Saturday evening forced the temporary closure of the Lagoon Pond drawbridge and sent two people to the hospital with minor injuries.

Tisbury police Lieut. Eerik Meisner said the department received the call at 6:17 p.m. Saturday evening.

He said a Nissan Rogue rear-ended a Porsche Carrera which then hit a Toyota Corolla. The Toyota had stopped at the crosswalk on the bridge to allow several cyclists to cross the road, Lieutenant Meisner said. No cyclists were injured.

He said the drivers of the Porsche and the Nissan were both taken to the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

Traffic backed up in both directions for about half an hour as first responders arrived on the scene, Lieutenant Meisner said.

Three Tisbury police officers and EMS responded to the scene. No citations were issued.

The accident happened around the time of U.S. Coast Guard exercises in the Vineyard Haven harbor involving a simulated rescue from a helicopter, so a crowd of spectators was on shore and traffic was heavy in the vicinity.
