Chilmark police and EMS responded to a single-car accident on South Road Thursday afternoon that sent the driver to the hospital.

The accident occurred just before 5 p.m. between Windy Gates and the Chilmark Community Center, Chilmark police Sgt. Sean Slavin said at the scene.

The Subaru Forester was headed down-Island when it rolled over, Sergeant Slavin said. Police said initial reports indicated that the driver, who has not been named, may have fallen asleep at the wheel.

The driver was transported to the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital by Tri-Town ambulance with non life-threatening injuries, Sergeant Slavin said.

Chilmark police, fire and EMS all responded. West Tisbury and Aquinnah assisted with traffic control.

The road was closed briefly during the response and then reopened. The car was towed from the scene.

Sergeant Slavin said the accident is under investigation and no citations have been issued.
