A few effects of Hurricane Florence arrived on Tuesday with torrential rains throughout the day. Perhaps it was just enough to fill the ponds once again and maintain the trees before autumn arrives. Activities have certainly quieted down in Aquinnah and across the Island. Shops are closing earlier at the cliffs. The sunsets have been even more spectacular during these last days of summer while the weather has remained warm enough for swimming.

Aquinnah Cultural Center tours will be available on Thursday, Friday and Saturday this week from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. For information, call 508-645-7900.

Thank you to Tony Saccoccia, Jack O’Malley and their staff at Menemsha Galley who provided for the 31st annual lobster roll luncheon for the up-Island Council on Aging. The luncheon was started by previous Galley owners Ted and Karin Stanley, continued with the Fenner family, including Frank, Merrily and Barbara, and now with Tony and Jack. Thank you to the Rattner family for allowing the luncheon to be held at their waterside property. Nearly 70 elders from across the Vineyard attended with our director Joyce Albertine overseeing it all. Assistance was provided by Bethany DeBettencourt Hammond, Tanya Larsen and many volunteers. Special guests included USCG Station Menemsha Chief Robert Parent and BM1 Adam Smith. ‘Til next year.
